The DSLP is a two-part residential programme that enhances the strategic leadership skills of senior members of the Defence community. It has been designed to embrace the Whole Force Approach and is open to 1* military personnel and senior civil servants.Other Government department senior civil servants and equivalent Defence industry partners also attend, greatly enhancing the diversity and richness of debate.
The residential nature of the programme, and the calming influence of Beckett House, provides a perfect opportunity for delegates to reflectively assess their current performance as a leader. Exploration of self as a leader is enhanced through the use of 360 and personality reports during one-on-one sessions with a professional coach.
Module 1 exposes delegates to the latest leadership ideas, concepts and challenges in sessions led by internationally renowned speakers and highly skilled facilitators from within the Defence community. To capitalise on the additional expertise brought by delegates, honest and open sharing of leadership experiences is encouraged; Chatham House rules apply.
The 6-week gap between modules is an ideal opportunity to put new learning and insights into practice. Delegates are encouraged to write a development plan of how they might introduce new ideas to their workplace and report back on their progress.
In Module 2, delegates are given the opportunity to share their recent experiences before moving on to consider how they lead their teams and interact in the wider human systems within their organisations. Throughout the two modules, delegates will expand their knowledge and understanding of themselves as a leader; whilst building relationships and expanding their peer network to provide advice and counsel long after the programme has finished.
Delegates are automatically invited back to the Defence Academy series of leadership masterclasses which run throughout the year.
