This level of Command and Staff Training (CST), known as Intermediate Level Professional Military Development (Air) (ILPMD(A)) is designed to allow officers to step outside their professional specialisations, not only to broaden leadership and management skills, but also to analyse key defence issues.
ILPMD(A) comprises the Junior Officers' Development Programme (JODP) and the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Air) (ICSC(A)). The education and training is designed to enhance officers’ managerial and staff skills and their contribution to the operational output of the RAF. The training is available to officers of all RAF Branches. The elements that make up ILPMD(A) are matched to rank, experience, likely future appointments and the needs of the RAF, using modern integrated, blended and progressive teaching techniques.
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has independently accredited the ILPMD(A) programme. Officers who complete the ILPMD(A) programme earn credits towards the award of an Executive Diploma in Management at level 7. The Open University also awards credits for the ICSC(A) towards Open University qualifications.
